Why Public Speaking is Good for You

For many people, the idea of public speaking gives them panic attacks. That fear they have, rather than keeping them safe, is holding them back in more ways than they realize. Yes, ladies and gentleman, public speaking IS good for you. Let me tell you why.

First, it gives you a platform, a way to get your message out to the masses. Whether it's one person or a hundred people, they are a captive audience and they are listening to you. You want people to hear what you have to say. What better way to make that happen than to stand in front of a room full of people?!

Second, it establishes you as an authority in your field. People might not know who you are, but they will now! Informative public speaking allows you to share what you know to help the audience enhance their understanding on a specific topic. Your audience should leave the presentation feeling as though they've received incredible value by what you've shared with them.

Third, it helps you to master your message. You know your topic inside and out. You've practiced your speech, your pitch, your presentation a million times over. But do you know how to handle the curve ball? Inevitably there will be someone who disagrees with your position. Do you know how to handle it? You need to stay calm, cool and collected in the face of adversity. Being able to confidently argue your position, taking out the emotion and sticking to the facts, will only benefit you and your audience.

Fourth, it increases your visibility and can open more doors. You've already positioned yourself as an expert by presenting at this event. Why not do it again? By engaging with your audience in a meaningful way during your presentation, you are creating connections. Those connections can become a part of your network, leading to even more opportunities in the future. Don't be afraid to be human and interact with the people in the crowd. The more you engage, the more engaged they will become increasing what they take away from your talk.

Finally, it boosts your confidence! Public speaking will allow you to flex your skills and strengthen your power of persuasion. Each public speaking engagement will help you master the ability to win over the crowd. It will help you realize that not only are you knowledgable about your topic, but you have the skills necessary to impress that knowledge upon others.
